About CIAWU
Commercial, Industrial and Allied Workers Union (CIAWU) is a Malawian labor union dedicated to the promotion of workers’ rights and welfare across the commercial, industrial and allied sectors.
CIAWU is an affiliate of the Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU) and was officially registered on 6 May 1998 under section 15 of the Malawi Labour Relations Act No. 16 of 1996.
The union focuses on recruiting, organizing, educating and advocating for workers, ensuring their protection and well‑being within national labor laws and relevant International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions on fair labor practices.
Historical Background
CIAWU was established in 1998 and has since played a vital role in protecting and advancing the interests of workers in key sectors of Malawi’s economy.
Over the years, the union has grown into a respected and influential voice within the Malawian labor movement, grounded in the principles of fair labor practices and workers’ rights.

Objectives
- Recruit: To expand its membership base and ensure that the rights of all workers in Malawi are protected by being part of the union.
- Organize: To bring together workers from various sectors, industries and backgrounds to collectively advocate for improved working conditions and benefits.
- Educate: To provide members with information and resources necessary for understanding their rights and responsibilities as workers, including knowledge about labor laws and regulations.
- Promote Workers’ Rights: To tirelessly advocate for the rights and welfare of workers, working in accordance with national and international labor laws and ILO conventions on fair labor practices.
